Mark your calendars for the First Annual Lakewood Cluster Parish Picnic to be held on Sunday, September 17th, from 1-4pm on the grounds of our parish school, Lakewood Catholic Academy. Valet parking will be available. Join us for food, games, raffles and fun for all ages, while meeting parishioners from the Lakewood parishes. Missionary Speaker | Fr. Percival | July 29-30

Fr. Percival P. Tayem, OFM, is known as Fr. Percy to his confreres, friends, and parishioners in his native country, the Philippines. He became a full fledged Franciscan in May 2001 and was ordained a priest in August 2003. His interest in the Missions brought him to Sri Lanka where he served both Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic groups for five years. He returned to the Philippines after his Franciscan Studies in England. At present, he is the pastor of San Jose Tagapagtanggol (St. Joseph the Protector) Parish in Quezon City, at the same time Director of the Development office of the OFM Franciscans in the Philippines.

Weeds and Wheat | Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Once again we have an extensive reading from Matthew chapter 13, in which the evangelist has gathered together the parables of Jesus. Only the first section, containing the parable of the darnel in the field, is given above. In the more extended reading provided in the lectionary this parable is followed by the parable of the mustard seed, the parable of the yeast, and then Jesus' explanation of the parable of the darnel. Darnel is a particularly troublesome kind of weed which resembles wheat. It can be easily understood why the land-owner instructs the laborers to remove the weed only at harvest time, for to pull it out beforehand would probably uproot the wheat and thus destroy the crop. It is time for the summer giving tree to benefit the Cleveland Catholic Charities Office of Migration and Refugee Services. Once again we will be collecting school supplies and uniforms to help the children be prepared for school. This year Cleveland Catholic Charities Office of Migration & Refugee Services are expecting to resettle about 250 refugees from across the globe. Approximately 50% will be children. Most of the refugees that are arriving in Cleveland have been in camps for 17 years or more. Almost all of the children have never experienced life outside a refugee camp. Theology on Tap | Every Third Wednesday | Beachcliff Tavern | 7p

Every Third Wednesday of the Month, young adults in their 20s and 30s are invited to gather in the party room at Beachwood Tavern (19245 Detroit Ave., Rocky River) at 7pm to hear an engaging speaker reflect on some aspect of the faith while enjoying a pint and some tasty food! The next Theology on Tap (TOT) is: Wednesday July 19 at 7pm. Each night kicks off with a social, which includes complementary appetizers and a cash bar, followed by a speaker at 7:30 pm. Volunteers Needed for Community Meal | July 12

This Wednesday, July 12th, is our monthly community meal, served in Andrews Hall to the needy within our community. Due to vacations, etc., we are often short on help for our summer meals. If you could come for an hour or two, we would greatly appreciate it. Set-up starts at 4:00, serving at 6:00, and clean up at 6:30. Hope to see you there!

Vocations in CLE | July 8 | 9am | St. Clement Hall

Come learn about the status of priesthood and religious life in the Diocese of Cleveland from Fr. Michael McCandless, Director of Diocesan Vocation Office. He will give a summary of the present situation, along with describing the accompanying challenges and blessings. Questions and answers will follow in St. Clement Hall. Fr. Independence Day Prayer Dear God, As we celebrate with fire works and festivals, help us remember that our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were signed into our heritage with the willing blood of American patriots. Most of all, help us to remember that the rights of all people are more than words on a document, and that all people have rights because You have given us the dignity of human life.
